09.11.2016 “Vostochny Port” recorded systematic improvements in environmental performance for the first 10 months of 2016
JSC "Vostochny Port" summarized their actions pertaining to environmental protection for the 10 month period ended October 2016. Mandatory environmental monitoring has affirmed the effectiveness of the company's environmental processes. Our in-house Ecology department regularly conducts environmental assessments. The primary purpose of this is to continuously evaluate and improve the mechanism of environmental management in our company. Specialists monitor the state of the atmospheric air, waste water and water basin.
During the course of the year an assessment of the atmospheric air was conducted at 6 different points on the boarder of the sanitary-protection zone of the enterprise. The results of the evaluation indicated that the air load of nitrogen oxide and dioxide, sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, inorganic dust, suspended matters and carbon soot measured at a level lower than the maximum permissible concentration (MPC). Since the beginning of 2016, the maximum permissible concentration of pollutants discovered in the atmospheric air of the sanitary-protection zone of the Company was not exceeded.
JSC “Vostochny Port” is scrupulously monitoring the condition of the water. In 2016, under the program of industrial environmental control, 65 samples of waste water, 58 samples of natural water (sea and river) were collected at 11 test points. The evaluation was conducted to determine the chemical, microbiological and parasitological indicators. According to the assessment the maximum permissible concentration was not exceeded at the control points. All samples are tested by the environmental department that includes two accredited laboratories.
Annually, in an effort to minimize the environmental impact of its business, JSC “Vostochny Port” allocates funds for new initiatives and the renewal of existing enterprise sewage treatment facilities, aspiration and watering systems. 21 air purification units and 8 wastewater treatment plants are deployed in our business. These facilities utilize multi-level filtration that ensures that the level of waste water purity is able to satisfy the criteria of the fishery water bodies.
JSC “Vostochny Port” takes responsibility for the replenishment of the number of native species in the waters of Vrangel Bay, the location of the enterprise. A systematic program to ensure the recovery of bio-resources has been conducted during the last few years. JSC “Vostochny Port” has concluded agreements with several hatcheries to farm scallop, Siberian salmon, sea cucumber and cultivate Laminaria (seaweed). During this period of time, 10 million of juvenile Siberian salmon, over a million cultivated juvenile sea cucumber, scallop and Laminaria Japonica sprouts were released into the waters of Vrangel Bay. Although these initiatives cost the stevedore millions of rubles annually, investing in our environment continues to be an important pillar of this enterprise.
The second annual "Ecological marathon" was held from February until September for the residents of Vrangel settlement and the greater territory of Primorsky krai with the organizational support of “Vostochny Port”.
Within a few months of the marathon participants passed through a series of environmental quests and various guided tours were organized to the protected environmental areas. In schools, the ecology lessons were arranged on how to collect and separate garbage and protect the environment. The voluntary Saturday clean-up sessions at the municipal beaches were organized as well.
